Second Hand Suffering
(2023) - Fiction
7 minutes
In this fiction film, we see a surgeon removing the antennae from one of the beings. The constant connection with the rest of humanity is too overwhelming for her to bear. After the surgery, the being feels a sense of relief and freedom, having been liberated from this hyper-empathy.
In a hypothetical reality similar to our own, an advanced version of humanity has evolved with distinctive features, including angular facial contours and antennae on their foreheads. These antennae allow them to sense the neural frequencies of others, a development that emerged after they eradicated all natural enemies and began turning on each other due to their inherent self-hate. To prevent self-destruction, the rise began to an evolved humanoid being that is permanently empathically connected to others. Killing an individual feels like committing suicide, and torture is experienced as self-inflicted pain. This evolution, known as "Hyper-empathy," significantly reduced violence and increased their overall survival rate.
