Waterpas
(2022) - Documentary
10 minutes
As a child, I would go to Texel every so often; this is a small island in the north of the Netherlands. In the evenings, when the sun had set, I would watch the lights of the oil rigs located in the North Sea. Over the years, many of these rigs have disappeared, which is mostly a good thing, as the platforms cause damage to the climate. On the other hand, in my childish imagination, the platforms were like magical places. As a child, I tried to imagine what was happening on these sites; why are they so isolated from the rest of the world? Who lives there? What do those people do there?
I decided that I wanted to rediscover these magical places through the process of making this documentary film. However, I soon found out that it is impossible for outsiders to access the platforms. While this complicates things considerably, it also made me feel even more drawn to the oil rigs. My mind began fantasizing again about this secluded place in the middle of the sea. I realize that the possibility of actually setting foot on one of these structures is far-fetched. But there are other ways to think about these dots on the horizon. I decided to use digital means to gather as much data as possible.
